La Jolla, CA

The new La Jolla Country Day School Performing Arts Center replaces the existing outdoor amphitheater.  The current single-story performing arts classroom building will be replaced with new spaces for orchestra and other performing arts programs.  A new open-air theater (exterior performance space) is planned for the south side, near the Upper School building.  The total interior area is approximately 25,000 GSF.  It includes the main theater, black box space, lobby designed with art exhibition space, stage, and a full complement of back-of-house rooms.  Central to the performance arts center is a multi-level, 750-seat main theater.  The stage will incorporate state-of-the-art electronic rigging and catwalk access.  An orchestra pit with movable "pit filler" system provides flexibility.  A unique feature of the design is the facade system, made up of large roll-up window walls, which will allow access to Torrey Walk and permit the lobby to "merge" with the outdoors in pleasant weather.
